Kon Ha Nung plateau: “The green jewel in the heart of the Central Highlands”

International Standing and Core Values

Kon Ha Nung Plateau, the traditional name of the northeastern highland region of former Gia Lai Province, was officially recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a World Biosphere Reserve on 15th September 2021. This designation marked Kon Ha Nung as the 11th Biosphere Reserve in Viet Nam and the second in the Central Highlands to be included in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves. This prestigious title not only affirms Kon Ha Nung’s international significance on the global conservation map but also opens new opportunities for sustainable development that harmoniously integrates nature conservation with community livelihoods.

Often referred to as the “Green Jewel” of Gia Lai, Kon Ha Nung Plateau embodies outstanding natural, cultural and international cooperation values. Covering a total area of 413,511.67 hectares, the Biosphere Reserve includes core zones such as Kon Ka Kinh National Park and Kon Chu Rang Nature Reserve. As the so-called “Roof of the Central Highlands,” the area represents one of the most important biodiversity hotspots not only in Viet Nam but also in Southeast Asia.

A Convergence Point of Global Biodiversity

Kon Ha Nung Plateau is characterized by diverse tropical and subtropical rainforest ecosystems, with rich and diverse biodiversity. Its flora comprises more than 1,700 plant species, including globally threatened species such as Agarwood (Critically Endangered – CR) and Vietnamese Hopea (Endangered – EN), along with numerous newly discovered or scientifically re-identified species. The fauna is equally impressive, with 87 mammal species, 326 bird species, and hundreds of rare reptiles, amphibians, fish and insects. The plateau is particularly renowned as a “sanctuary of primates,” notably home to the Grey-shanked Douc Langur (Pygathrix cinerea), an endemic primate classified as Critically Endangered and listed among the 25 most endangered primate species worldwide. Another iconic species is the Kon Ka Kinh Laughingthrush (Garrulax konkakinhensis), a narrowly endemic bird recognized by the international scientific community. Its presence provides compelling evidence of the area’s global conservation value. In addition, other rare mammals such as the Large-antlered Muntjac (Muntiacus vuquangensis), Annamite Muntjac (Muntiacus truongsonensis), Northern Yellow-cheeked Gibbon (Nomascus annamensis), and Clouded Leopard (Neofelis nebulosa)… have also been recorded.

Kon Ha Nung Plateau is furthermore part of the Kon Tum Plateau Endemic Bird Area, identified by international ornithologist Tordoff (2002) as one of the most important bird areas in Viet Nam.

Rich Cultural Identity - A Confluence of UNESCO Heritage

Alongside its exceptional ecological values, Kon Ha Nung Plateau also serves as a cultural cradle of the Ba Na ethnic community, one of the indigenous peoples of the Central Highlands and custodians of the Space of Gong Culture of the Central Highlands, recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Traditional festivals, communal rong houses, brocade weaving, bamboo and rattan craftsmanship, and indigenous forest knowledge collectively shape a distinctive cultural identity, reflecting a deep and harmonious relationship between humans and nature.

Communities living in the buffer and transition zones play a pivotal role in forest protection and sustainable development through forest protection contracts and active participation in ecotourism and community-based tourism, thereby contributing to sustainable livelihoods and long-term conservation outcomes.

UNESCO-standard sustainable development model - MAB

Kon Ha Nung Plateau is recognized by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve for fulfilling three core functions: Conservation, Development and Support - Education - Science.

Potential for International Cooperation and Development Orientation

Kon Ha Nung Plateau has emerged as a focal area for Gia Lai Province in attracting international cooperation in biodiversity conservation; climate change response, forest protection and emission reduction; ecotourism and cultural tourism, particularly community-based models; scientific research, expert exchange and genetic resource surveys; as well as the promotion of green and circular economies in highland areas.

Under the 2026 - 2030 Five-Year Plan, Gia Lai Province aims to develop Kon Ha Nung into a national-level center for research, conservation and environmental education; expand international linkages within the World Network of Biosphere Reserves; strengthen cooperation with countries (such as the United States, Germany...) in green livelihood development and ecotourism; establish a “green corridor” connecting Kon Ka Kinh - Kon Chu Rang - the Eastern Truong Son Range.

Ecotourism - A Strategic Pathway for Gia Lai

With its diverse terrain, cool climate, natural waterfalls, vast primary forests, and villages rich in gong culture, the Kon Ha Nung Plateau is an ideal destination for nature-based exploration; adventure and trekking tourism; indigenous cultural experiences; and environmental research and education.

Iconic landmarks such as K50 Waterfall in Kon Chu Rang Nature Reserve, Mount Kon Ka Kinh (1,748 m), pristine forest trails, and traditional festivals have become emblematic images of Gia Lai Province in international promotion.

A “Green Jewel” Towards a Sustainable Future

Kon Ha Nung Plateau is not only a source of pride for Gia Lai Province but also a meaningful contribution by Viet Nam to the global biosphere network. Through the concerted efforts of government authorities, local communities, scientists, and international partners, Kon Ha Nung is envisioned as a national model of green development, ecological transition, and biodiversity conservation.

Amid the vast Central Highlands, this “Green Jewel” continues to shine, carrying a powerful message of shared responsibility for forest protection, cultural preservation, and cooperative development towards a sustainable future for Gia Lai and the world.
