The Yang Pơtao Apui rain-praying ceremony is one of the important rituals of the local people. This is a folk belief culture of the Gia Rai ethnic group. It is to pray for a good harvest, a prosperous life, favorable weather and good health.
The rain-praying ceremony is one of the important rituals, performed only by the Pơtao Apui. The Gia Rai people believe that the "magic sword" is the only intermediary that can contact the gods to call for rain to irrigate the villagers. The Yang Pơtao Apui rain-praying ceremony usually takes place at the peak of the dry season, when drought is severe and fierce.
The rain-praying ceremony usually takes place at the beginning of the dry season or the beginning of the rainy season, depending on the region, usually around March - May of the solar calendar. This is a national intangible cultural heritage, recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism since 2015.
Usually held in sacred forests, streams, communal houses - sacred places respected by the community; the atmosphere is solemn, but also bustling with ethnic music and gong sounds.
The Yang Pơtao Apui rain-praying ceremony plays a very important role in conveying the dreams and prayers of people, especially the Jrai ethnic group, to the sky because the culture here is a culture associated with nature. Recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage, the Yang Pơtao Apui rain-praying ceremony is not only a testament to the efforts to preserve traditional identity but also becomes a unique cultural symbol of the Central Highlands. This is both a source of pride for the community and opens up great potential to promote cultural tourism, attracting visitors to explore the rich beauty of this land.
